Runners gave a smile to the little ones at Madibaneng

Friday, 10 May 2019: On Friday, 10 May 2019 the athletes of the Top Runners Athletics Club donated 80 school shoes to benefit 80 learners (30 girls and 50 boys) at Madibaneng Primary School at Seleka Village in Lephalale.

These runners are Eskom employees who are engaged in external wellness activities but in the process are exercising Sinobuntu value by responding to the needs of the local communities.

“Eskom received a request for donation of school shoes and approached the Top Runners Athletics Club who gladly responded by buying shoes for the learners”, said Yonela Zongo, CSI Manager for Eskom as she introduced the purpose of the event.

In attendance were the local Chief, Councillor, SGB chairperson, teachers, learners, four members of Top Runners Club and Eskom representatives.

Cllr Modiba responded to the gesture by stating that, “I am grateful that Eskom and Top Runners were responsive to the needs of our children, it goes a long in ensuring learners can walk to school with ease. Our children are talented and are also in great need of sports kits for soccer and netball”.

“Many submitted donations requests to Eskom but we were blessed that Eskom and Top Runners responded to ensure each learner received a pair of shoes. We will appreciate if you can also donate school uniforms to our children as many are in dire need of it”, said school principal, Mr Molala.

It was impressive to see these little ones demonstrate their ability to spell as Yonela challenge them with various words. In spite of the dire poverty they found themselves in, they easily and confidently spelt these words: athletics, stadium, player, football and coach.

In giving a key note address Ernest Morolong, Executive member of Top Runners Club said to the learners, “Runners decided to share the little that we have with you in order to encourage you to pursue education, strive to learn and work hard for the betterment of your tomorrow. Respect the elders; boys take care of girls, do not beat them and girls respect boys. Take care of each other and share with each other”.

He further indicated that this donation was made possible by various Top Runners from local community and employees from different companies including Medupi, Vanedi, Witbank LOTTA, Kaefer and Exxaro.

“This act of giving by our Guardians is a true embodiment of the spirit of Sinobuntu – a value that we pride ourselves with as Eskomites. It gives us joy when Guardians, in their personal level, join hands in making a difference in the lives of those in need within our communities”, said Mashudu Khoza, Senior Communication Advisor as she respond on behalf of Eskom.

Runners ensured that each child received a light pack with an apple, biscuits, chocolate, potato crisps and drink.
